The importance of setting custom white balance.

On a cloudy day I used a 18% gray card to white balance my Canon camera.  The blueish image is before custom white balance and the one below that is the custom white balanced image.  Which do you think looks better and/or more accurate?

How to add a Flickr slideshow to your wordpress.com blog!

•March 17, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Scroll down to the bottom of this post to view my Pechanga Reservation visit.  Adding a Flickr slide show is not as easy as copy/pasting the ‘embedded’ code on Flickr.

Here are the steps:

1. Find and open your Flickr Slideshow.  Click on the ‘slideshow‘ word on the top right of the set that you want a slideshow of.

2. Highlight and copy this code:

javascript:__vptarget='bookv2';function%20loadScript(scriptURL)%20{%20var%20scriptElem%20=%20document.createElement('SCRIPT');%20scriptElem.setAttribute('language',%20'JavaScript');%20scriptElem.setAttribute('src',%20scriptURL);%20document.body.appendChild(scriptElem);}window.open('http://vodpod.com/popup_intro.html','vodpod_share','toolbar=0,status=0,resizable=1,width=540,height=510');loadScript('http://vodpod.com/javascripts/bookmarklet/share_video_client2.js?rand'+Math.random());void(0)

—*if needed*—
drag and drop the “add to Vpod” button on the top right to the address bar to reveal the same code as above in the address bar. Cancel out of the new window that pops up. Copy the code in the address bar.

http://vodpod.com/button

3. Paste the code into the address bar of the window with the slideshow open and press ‘enter’ on your keyboard.

4. Follow the instructions that pop up.  A preview of what your slideshow will look like should pop up.

-you will have to create an account with Vodpod

-on the third step, click on “Post to your blog.” on the lower right.

-you will have to give them your username and password to your WordPress blog.

5. If you’re doing this at home or am going to do this more often then you may as well install the vodpod bar found here:

Beloved Daughters

•December 7, 2009 • Leave a Comment

This weekend worked out well since Balboa Park was having a ‘Christmas in the Park’ event where all the museums were free to walk through I was was going there anyway to hang out with friends.

Fazal Sheikh’s Beloved Daughters was a short gallery of mainly black and white images of children from India. This surprised me since I did not know anything about the gallery except the title and actually goes well with the movie ‘Born into Brothels’ which I had to watch last week for another class. The photos are captured with strong bokeh to isolate the subject from the background in a portrait like pose. This is a positive and negative for me since the pictures are strong and focus on the subject but require explanation of what you’re looking at and why. I don’t know how he could have made it so that no explanation was necessary given the circumstances but a photo that speaks for itself is strong than one with a caption under it.
This exhibit was more photo journalism than the other single photographer exhibits at Balboa Park. The photos were of amazing quality but the subject matter just does not interest me. He could not bring about interest from me which could be because I’ve seen worse photos with worse stories attached through my studies of 20th century wars.

Warning to any others going to Balboa Park during this event, parking is bed… It took one of my friends over an hour to find a spot!
